History

Founded in 1991, ORC has assembled an organization of experienced and dedicated professionals who deliver the often challenging and complex solutions to customer requirements. From the beginning, the focus of the company was to apply disciplined systems engineering principles to technological needs and deliver practical solutions in often disparate operational environments. Having established a reputation for taking the hypothetical to the operational, ORC was engaged by the DoD to meet requirements for secure electronic transactions. Working with the Navy ORC developed systems that supported a secure business-to-government environment. As the Information Assurance (IA) industry matured, ORC was in the forefront of technological solutions for the DoD.

In 1993 ORC was certified under the Small Business Administration’s 8(a) program and successfully graduated from that program in 2002.

1994 – 1999
ORCs launch of the Navy Acquisition Public Key Infrastructure (NAPKI) created an opportunity to provide similar services to other government agencies. The NAPKI provided the necessary security environment for the Navy’s One Touch system with transactions for Naval Supply orders, RFPs and a Virtual Bid Room for electronic bid submission. This work became the first operational experience for which future DoD and GSA PKI systems would be drawn upon.

ORC became the first designated Interim External Certificate Authority (IECA) and was awarded a General Services Administration (GSA) Access Certificate for Electronic Services (ACES) contract. With these milestones, ORC was positioned as one of a select group of providers for Government compliant identity management and IA solutions. ORC maintained core business in systems engineering services and realized the potential for identity management and information assurance managed services.

2000 – 2011
As the government emphasis on information assurance and identity management increased, ORC led the way. The company played a critical role in defining the operational standards for the industry, by providing operational expertise to enhance the DoD PKI capabilities and becoming the first compliant US Government External Certificate Authority (ECA). Most recently, ORC updated their ACES offering to new specifications to support the E-Authentication Federation as the first commercial Shared Service Provider to attain full Authorization to Operate (ATO) to provide Level 1, 2, 3 and 4 credentials. The ORC philosophy of doing it right the first time by meeting specifications and exceeding customer expectations helped to build a solid reputation in government circles. ORC is currently positioned as a leading force in meeting the President’s Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and FIPS-201 compliance.

ORCs reputation for providing government-compliant, operationally-ready systems, attracted leading IA technology companies to partner with ORC. Selected partners include RSA Security, Siemens, Tumbleweed, Sun Microsystems, Caymas, nCipher, SafeNet, Stratus Technologies and xTec.

In October 2004, ORC was acquired by WidePoint Corporation. WidePoint provides an umbrella of innovative technology solution providers all focused on the federal government. WidePoint’s focus is to specialize in planning, managing and implementing Information Technology solutions with an emphasis on secure authentication service. As new companies are added under the umbrella, ORC takes advantage of a continually expanding suite of solutions and resources from which to offer clients a wide variety of services and support.
